I love working with children. Their fresh views never fail to amaze and delight me. I get the same thrill when God makes Himself known; when He is obviously acting in our lives.
As I prepared for the regular first and third Sunday children’s church when I share the Gospel message with the younger members of our congregation, I wondered how Joshua’s trust and total dependency on God’s crazy combat commands could best be explained to a 4-year old. Follow the Leader is a game where someone walks in a circle, or swings their arms, or jumps up and down, and everyone else has to follow long without question or alteration.
Three children in the first service were most enthusiastic and clearly grasped the concept. When the youngest child took her turn to lead the other children on a trek through the music room, she chose to share a Spanish lesson learned from Ms. Maday Primellas, Trinity’s Spanish teacher. Hannah Wheeler led us up onto the risers and stopped on each color saying, “Red in Spanish is rojos”; “Green in Spanish is verde”; Yellow in Spanish is amarillo”; “Blue in Spanish is azul”. We crossed over the risers three times and each time Hannah changed the teaching phrase. Amazing! Thank you Ms. Maday. Thank you Hannah. I have no doubt my message to follow Jesus wherever He leads was received and understood by that little group of young children. Hannah, Ridley, and Denton trusted that red, green, yellow, and blue are also rojos, verde, amrillo, and azul. They didn’t question, didn’t challenge; they just followed the leader.
What a great lesson for those beyond the age of Children’s Church. Trust Jesus and follow Him no matter how crazy or senseless the way He is leading us may seem.
