Recalling what we heard this past Sunday before worship:
There’s something to be said about looking somebody in the eye and calling them by their name
Something that grabs ahold of you and makes you feel one in the same
Making every wrinkle in a crow’s foot just an expressive laugh line
And every black and purple bruise just a way to make em shine
And from our faces to our fingerprints,
it seems only obvious that God intended us to be identified by design.
And if God’s first act included the naming of man,
Then what happens when the curtain falls right on the place in which he stands
And he’s left in this city with nothing to name him
It’s then time for him to take the first step to change him.
Because life is a staircase filled with creaky broken floorboards
And for my friend Joe, when it started to rain, it began to pour
And he found himself homeless and lacking any hope
When the puddle became too deep, he called out to God for a rope.
And through His glory, helping hands came in the form of volunteers
Who sat down with Joe and listened to his story as he wiped away tears
Telling of the blessings which made him never give up, blessings to survive
Blessings of restoring dignity and hope which made him feel alive.
And when I say my life has been forever changed as a result of IDignity, I say it through Joe’s eyes.
Twelve thousand faces changed by a program dedicated towards providing such a basic need
Twelve thousand hearts touched by your decision to do a good deed.
Twelve thousand opportunities to succeed.
Because every broken staircase can be fixed with hard work, hammer and a nail
Identification being the very tool to allow their ship to sail.
So I ask you today to join us in our walk and our mission
To bring yourself out of your comfort zone and just ssshh…listen
Challenge yourself to imagine how it feels for the rain to reach down to the bone
To give the opportunity for the least of us to find a home.
To look somebody in the eye and call them by their name.
To practice one of God’s greatest lessons, and serve each other, as one in the same.
